The Vietnam War, or the Second Indochina War, was a war fought in Vietnam from 1956 to 1975. This military struggle involved the North Vietnamese and the National Liberation Front or NLF in disagreement with the South Vietnamese army and the United States . The Vietnamese struggled to gain independence from France from 1946 to 1954. This was during the First Indochina War. When this war was over, Vietnam was divided into North and South Vietnam . Vietnamese communists, who wanted to unify Vietnam under Communist rule and who opposed France , took control of North Vietnam . Non-Communist Vietnamese took control of the South.
