NOTES ON TOWN OF ORIGIN: At the time of immigration the town Neu Heiduk was in the Oberscleisen region of Prussia, an industrial area, housing 19500 residents in 1871 and 72000 in 1910. This area was majority Polish, with a strong German minority. The ancient Roman name for the region was Silesia and this continues to be the name for the region in modern Poland. The area was awarded in 1179 to the Duke of Opole and remained part of the Duchy of Opole (Upper Silesia.) The area is rich in iron and lead ore and prospered. Soon the Bohemians moved in and then the Austrians and in 1742 the Prussians conquered Silesia. This area was a focal point of Prussian industrialization. The town name Heiduk means either "moorland" or "bandits". A "hajduk" is a sort of Robin hood figure, or freedom fighter. First appears on maps in 1627 as Hejduk. In 1903, the towns merged and took the name of the local steel works "Bismarckhütte." The year of emigration, a large prioneering carbochemical plant opened in Hajduks. It still runs as Zakłady Koksochemiczne Hajduki SA. The town was also feeling a resurgence of Polish nationalism. The town was renamed after WW1 by the Polish for their king Batory, since the "B" trademark appeared throughout the town. (Batory was of a powerful Hungarian line.) Today it is a sub-division in the 2 million people metropolis of Chorzów, Poland, just southwest of the city center. The Polish version of Heiduk, "Hajduki" appears on local signage for streets.
