1724 Purchased 1200 acres of the Wawayanda Patent in Orange Co., NY, from Lancaster Syms and Benjamin Aske. (Barclay, p. 36)
1733 Served as Assinstant Alderman in the Out Ward, a post his father also held. (Barclay, p. 36)
1734 Deed for his Wawayanda land approved. Moved there from his father's Harlem property, which he inherited. His land was wilderness and was broken by DeKay. Made colonel of the local militia. (Barclay, p. 36)
1744 Led a treaty party as Indian Agent to the Cashington tribe, which is heavily documented. (Barclay, p. 36-7)

RESEARCH NOTES: Account of his life and career researched by David Barclay in 1899 are included in "Historical Papers No.VI, published by the Historical Society of Newburgh Bay and Highlands in 1900. A copy of this work and papers is included in a Newberry Library collection in Chicago. It is referenced often in my research.

1701 Bought 235 acres in Out Ward, NYC, "bounded on the north side by lands of Tunis Ives, and southerly by Harlem line, between the lands of Thomas Turner ans Hudson's River." (Includes present-day Riverside Park in Morningside Hts neighborhood.)

Jacob Theuniszen de Key was born 1 in Tiel, Gelderland, Netherlands. He died 2 on 19 Mar 1691 in New York, NY. The cause of death was "killed by the explosion of a great gun" (Barclay, p.35). He married 3 Hillegond Theunis Quick on 29 Mar 1658 in New York, NY (Dutch Reformed Church). He immigrated 5 to Tiel, Neth. to New Amsterdam. He was employed 6 as baker, merchant, trader in New York, NY. He joined religion 7 elder of the Dutch Church.

ACTIVITY IN LEISLER'S REBELLION: De Key was imprisoned by Jacob Leisler's government, which took power via a popular uprising of the masses in New York during the Revolution of 1688. Leisler was supported by the Dutch-speaking working and middle class and those in support of a Protestant king. His opponents, de Key included, were mostly wealthy patroons and led by the Schuyler family and loyal to the British. Leisler accused them of loyalty to the "Catholic" James II. Leisler's militia took control of Fort James and renamed in Fort William in 1689 and then imprisoned de Key among others. De Key's son Jacobus was also imprisoned when he led a group in a failed attempt to storm the fort to release prisoners on 6/6/1690. De Key was killed in the skirmish that ended the rebellion and saw Leisler's execution.

Hillegond Theunis Quick [Parents] was born 1 in 1640 in New Amsterdam (now New York, NY). She was christened 2 on 25 Nov 1640 in New York, NY (Dutch Reformed Church). She died 3 on 15 Mar 1707 in New York, NY. She married 4 Jacob Theuniszen de Key on 29 Mar 1658 in New York, NY (Dutch Reformed Church).
