PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE: According to family oral tradition, gleaned mainly from Katy Kalb, Clemens originally of Jefferson, WI, moved to Indiana after his wife died in childbirth and came to settle in with his dead wife's friend, Mary Wilger. This story has proven a bit false, since I have uncovered that Mary Wilger married Clemence in Chicago in the same year that his wife, Emma, died.

She was employed 5 as Domestic Servant in 1880 in Chicago, IL.
PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE: Little is known of Emma's early life. Her maiden name remains a mystery. Emma died shortly after giving birth to Margaret Ott, the long-lived matriarch of the modern Kalb family.
According to family oral tradition, gleaned mainly from Katy Kalb, Clemence originally of Jefferson, WI, moved to Indiana after his wife, Emma, died in childbirth and came to settle in with his dead wife's friend, Mary Wilger. This story is suspect and has proved even more so as records have surfaced. According to marriage records found by SMP in NEIU's archive, Emma was actually Anna Maria of Jefferson, WI. She was married in LakeView, IL. Her maiden name was also Ott.
