"A Fatal Wreck. To a North-Bound Passenger Train on the Central. The Engine Ditched at Backley and Engineer Samuel S. Edgerly Loses His Life in the Smashup.

Samuel S. Edgerly, a veteran engineer on the Illinois Central, is dead. He was killed at the post of duty, on a passenger engine at Buckley at 3:30 o’clock this morning, and the whole of the Chicago division is in sorrow over the loss of one of the most popular engineer in the service... just as the great iron horse struck the switch point, south Buckley station, the second station north of Paxton, there was an unusual jar. Engineer Edgerly knew that something was wrong; he attempted to reverse the lever, but it was too late. The big engine was off the track; it reeled to the right and then plunged to the left, falling voer by the side of the track. In the fall, Engineer Edgerly did not have time to jump. He was pinned between the boiler head of the engine and the coal tender and there died before the people on the train could render him any assistance...
Every passenger aboard was out a minute after the train stopped, and gathered about the engine where the faithful engineer was pinned down. There were tons of weight between him and liberty and it could not be removed in time to save his life...
As soon as the corpse of Engineer Egderly could be removed from the wreck it was taken to Buckley and the coroner of Ford county began an inquest..."

CORRESPONDENCE: Corresponded with Fred Ash of the Illinois Railway Museum about photos I sent him given to me by R. Godenius in 12/2008. Here is a selection from the text of his response:
“The earleist photo shows a 4-4-0 type locomotive. This was the main type of freight and passenger locomotive on the Illinois Central for many years. From your photocopy, I cannot see an engine number. We do know that this locomotive was part of the Illinois Central's first order from the Rogers locomotive Works in 1854, but the photo was takes sometime after a rebuilding which took place sometime between 1871 and 1886. Because an air pump has been added ( the cylinders between the drivers) we can date this after the mid-1880s when Westinghouse airbrakes were added to trains. Originally numbered 1-109, these locomotives were renumbered in 1890 into the 1400 series. Originally they had an oval number plate on the side, which your photo does not exhibit, so I assume the picture dates from after the new number was applied. Numbers usually were also shown on the sand dome beneath the bell and on the side of the tender. The last of these locomotives were retired in 1896. If you can see the number on the original photo, perhaps we can narrow the dates a little. Best guess is 1890 to 1896. At this time, locomotivess were assigned to a regular engineer, so I assume this was your grandfather's regular. Engineers often had their pictures taken with their pride-and-joy. "
“Locomotive 1422 is a 2-6-4T. This is a rare photo, as only two locomotives of this type ran on the IC. They were used only in the Chicago commuter pool. These particular engines were delivered in November 1892 in anticipation of traffic to the World's Columbian Exposition. They were assigned to any available engineer. For the Fair, one notable driver was Luther "Casey" Jones. This picture actually dates from after a July 1900 renumbering. The engine was taken out of active service in 1926 when IC suburban service was electrified. It was scrapped in March 1928. You may have seen that the Illinois Railway Museum acquired a similar, but earlier IC locomotive of this type several years ago. It was in service from 1880 to 1926 and your relatives may well have operated it. Indeed, if they operated any commuter trains as the photographs suggest, that is highly likelythey wer eon this locomotive. IC 1419 was built in 1890 and received that number in July 1900. It was scrapped in March 1928. The coach in the background appears to be a Chicago commuter car."
"IC 130 could be one of two locomotives. Both were similar looking 0-6-0 switchers. The first was built in 1891 and retired in 1912. The second 310 was built in 1917 and retired in 1952. This may be the earlier engine. The roundhouse in the background could be either 28th Street Chicago, Burnham (93rd St. Chicago, now the campus of Chicago State University) or suburban Markham. Champaign also had a large roundhouse."
"As to the wreck that killed your grandfather, this appears to be before the Interstate Commerce Commission mandated the filing of accidents."
